Evil walks the streets of San Myushino tonight.
Huff, huff, huff...
"Get away from me, you crazy bastard!" she screams.
He runs after her.
Nobody can outrun this monster.
"No, stop--!!"
She doesn't have time to scream before the fangs sink deep into her carotid artery.
Gurgle...
The body hits the pavement with a dull thud.
The monster that dwells inside Wolfgang grows stronger.
Even he doesn't know where this will end.
"Uuuhn..."
There is muffled knocking coming from somewhere nearby.
"Stop... stop..."
Max tosses and turns.
The knocking gets louder.
"Max? Can you hear me?!"
"GET AWAY FROM ME!"
Max screams himself awake. He gasps for air.
It was just a dream?
The knocking stops.
"Max? ...I'm coming in!"
Zaiden enters the room.
"Max... thank God, you're still alive." he feels relieved. Max and he had never really gotten along before. Now they have a common enemy, and all their personal grudges seem far behind them.
"Leave me alone." Max struggles to stay upright.
It wasn't a dream after all. He really is in Hell.
"Come on, Max. You gotta eat something before he comes back. You can't die on me yet, man."
"Dying would be a Godsend. You might as well just leave me here," Max says, "I bet you're just worried you'll be next if I bail out."
Zaiden shakes his head in disagreement.
"Don't say that shit."
He walks around the bed, lifting Max up and putting one arm under his.
"Come on, I'll help you up."
They walk towards the door.
"I still hate your guts, you know," says Max.
Zaiden grins.
"I know."
Time passes.
It's after 2:00 in the morning.
Max has crumpled onto the floor, weak from exhaustion and dehydration. He can't even walk without help anymore. Held here against his will for days, he's been forced to give his blood to the monster whenever it beckons.
It is always thirsty.
He is terrified and alone. Max knows he can't run away. The monster will find him no matter where he tries to go.
He tries to resist, but it lunges at him.
No matter how many times it comes for him, he always puts up a fight.
But his strength is all but spent, and he is now easily overpowered.
Max falls unconscious. He has lost so much blood over the last few days it will be impossible for him to recover to his original state.
The monster keeps him that way.
The pain in his neck is always there now. A dull ache where teeth have been, and scar tissue refuses to grow over.
"Max?!"
Zaiden rushes to his friend's side.
"Max? Max!"
He lifts him off the floor, gently shaking his body. He worries that soon his friend will leave this world completely.
He holds him for a moment, praying to any God that will listen; please give him the power to help Max leave this waking nightmare!
He looks at the monster which is floating in mid-air.
"You bastard... you really think you can get away with this?!"
Zaiden doesn't know what comes over him. Perhaps his prayers have been answered. He runs at the monster with the force of his entire body
They fall to the ground with a crash.
His punches have his full weight behind them. He hits repeatedly with every last ounce of energy he has.
Zaiden eventually gets up. His fists ache. He doesn't believe that even a monster could stand up after taking such a brutal beating.
However, the monster is quick to meet him eye to eye. They glow red and match his fangs which are dripping with the blood of his best friend.
Terror grips Zaiden's heart.
Then Zaiden feels a cold hand take hold of his throat. He feels like he will be crushed like a tin can.
The monster holds him aloft.
Zaiden thinks he will die.
The monster's red eyes bore into him. It is as if Zaiden is seeing directly into the flames of Hell itself.
Then he is let go, and he tumbles to the floor, choking and gasping desperately for air. His vision is dark and starry, and he has lost feeling in his limbs.
The monster approaches.
It lifts his chin with such delicacy it seems almost impossible that this is the same hand that almost crushed him to death.
"Next time," the monster says, "You will die."
The monster leaves the two boys on the floor.
They are saturated in blood and sweat.
Zaiden's will to fight leaves him and he is left with only despair.
"Max... I'm sorry."
He slips into unconsciousness.
